The festival opens right in the heart of Dublin in the city’s oldest cathedral, with two events that establish the themes running through the entire programme. At 6.30 pm Ireland’s premiere choral ensemble, the National Chamber Choir, performs Messiaen’s Cinq Rechants under the direction of Catherine Simonpietri, interspersed with organ improvisations by British virtuoso David Briggs.

A reception for Pipeworks Friends in the cathedral crypt follows, during which the nave of the cathedral is transformed into a cinema for the 9 pm free screening of the 1939 silent movie classic The Hunchback of Notre Dame as David Briggs improvises the soundtrack on the cathedral organ.

Three of Ireland’s finest chamber choirs – New Dublin Voices, the Mornington Singers and Galway’s Cois Cladaigh – help Pipeworks bring the festival to a resounding close by singing at various city centre venues on Saturday 28 June, and on Sunday by joining Resurgam under the direction of Mark Duley, Pipeworks’ artistic director, in the presentation of a Vespers in seventeenth century Lutheran manner. 26 April 2008 - Pipeworks Organ Marathon Day
Dublin, Christ Church Cathedral
10am - 4pm

Organ Marathon

5 pm

Choral Evensong with Christ Church Cathedral Choir

6 pm Simon Harden - Organ Recital

Saturday 26 April 2008 in Christ Church Cathedral promises to be a fun day whether you're a music lover, organist or just want to do something different on a Saturday.
The Organ Marathon raises much needed funds for the Pipeworks festival. This year we have set ourselves a target of €8,000 to be raised at the marathon. So with 20 slots for playing from 10am to 4pm and that works out at an average of €400 per slot! The Marathon day is much more than fund raising - it's about socialising, enjoying the music and ambience of Christ Church and of course Evensong will be sung at 5.15pm by the cathedral choir - not to be missed.

This year we have also invited young Irish organist, Simon Harden, the 2007 prize winner of the coveted Schnitger organ prize to give a short organ recital at 6pm to round off the day. What could be more fitting. We hope that teas and coffees will be available in the crypt all day. Come along, enjoy, support and hear all about the festival.

If you would like to play the Christ Church Cathedral Organ on the day, please send an email to adminpipeworks@gmail.com to book your place in the schedule. Then download and print your sponsorship card and start fundraising!!!

Click here for the Pipeworks Organ Marathon Day 2008 poster. Please feel free to use the poster to tell your family, friends and colleagues.

SimonHarden

Engagements included work in Christ Church and St Patrick’s Cathedral, with the National Symphony Orchestra of Ireland and numerous recitals including a solo recital at the National Concert Hall.

His first destination was Berlin followed by Hamburg where he studied with Wolfgang Zerer and Pieter van Dijkat the Hochschule für Musik und Theater from 2002. Supported by a DAAD scholarship he received a first-class Diplom in performance in 2004. Further studies led him to Paris where under Eric Lebrun he was awarded a ‘Premier Prix’ for French literature. On receiving a scholarship from the City of Hamburg, Simon returned to complete a post-graduate degree (Konzertexamen) in the organ soloist class at the Hochschule für Musik und Theater.

In June 2007, Simon won 1st prize and audience prize at the ‘International Schnitger Organ Competition’ in Alkmaar, Holland and in October 2006 2nd prize at the Swiss International Organ Competition ‘Grand Prix Bach de Lausanne’. In December 2006 he was selected from the instrumental students at the HfMT in Hamburg to receive the DAAD prize for ‘outstanding performance and intercultural involvement’. He has held several positions as Organist and Choirmaster in Hamburg and deputised in many churches including the main church St Michaelis.
