PIPEWORKS PSALMATHON
In preparation for the 2011 festival, Pipeworks ran a Psalmathon in Christ Church Cathedral, Dublin on 21 May in which different choirs and groups of friends sang psalms in all their guises: plainchant, Anglican chant, responsorial psalmody, hymn paraphrases and favourite composed settings.
Lyric FM Culture File followed us throughout the day and spoke with Dr Margaret Daly Denton who gave a lecture 'Exploring the Psalms' illustrated by a schola of members of the cathedral choir. Their podcast is here. |

PIPEWORKS FESTIVAL 2011 (17-25 JUNE)
The 2011 festival took place in Crosshaven, Dundalk and Dublin. It featured choral and vocal concerts by The National Chamber Choir of Ireland, directed by Paul Hillier with organ works played by David Adams; Stile Antico's first performance in Ireland; Dublin's three cathedral choirs combining to sing at Sloemn Vespers in the Pro-Cathedral and Roisin O'Grady and Malcolm Proud. The members of the competition jury Jacques van Oortmerssen, David Titterington, Jon Laukvik and David Higgs all gave recitals and masterclasses and David Leigh and Joseph Ripka also gave organ recitals. Mark Duley, Kate Manning, Kerry Houston, David Higgs and Jacques van Oortmerssen participated in a roundtable session in the SMI Conference 2011 on issues surrounding the preservation of historic organs in Ireland. The International Organ Competition sat at the heart of the festival with quarterfinal rounds taking place outside Dublin for the first time (using the 2010 Henk van Eeken organ in Holy Trinity Church, Crosshaven and the 1900 Father Willis organ in St Patrick's Cathedral, Dundalk). The semifinals and finals took place on the Kenneth Jones/Flentrop organ of Christ Church Cathedral, Dublin.

COMPLETE SYMPHONIES OF LOUIS VIERNE
David Leigh (Pipeworks Associate Artist) played all six Vierne organ symphonies in a series of recitals on 26 May, 9 and 23 June and 7 July. We are very lucky in Dublin to have the ideal combination of elements to present these symphonies: David Leigh, who is one of the few organists internationally able to take on the Herculean task of presenting them entire in a single recital series; the heroic Willis organ of St Patrick's Cathedral; and of course the great Gothic church which houses it. The series lived up to its promise of something for everyone, from neo-Gothic fantasists to lovers of fin de siècle opulence.
