Reviews of the Pipeworks Festival, 20-29 June 2008
20 June, Pipeworks Festival Fanfare, Christ Church Cathedral, Dublin
"Visit the You Tube website and search under "improvisation". Among the thousands of videos you shall find, those devoted to art music are dominated by organists, especially from France. So it was appropriate that the opening concerts of the pipeworks festival of organ and choral music should showcase improvisation..."
"The National Chamber Choir [...] gave a technically assured and expressively intense performance of Messiaen's demanding Cinq Rechants (1948) for 12 solo voices. The songs were interspersed with improvisations from the virtuoso British organist, David Briggs. His Messiaen-esque textures [...] epitomised the flamboyance and control that can make French liturgical improvisation such a compelling experience."

23 - 28 June, Messiaen Centenary
Messiaen's "output for the organ is substantial, amounting to over seven hours' worth of music and Mark Duley, the artistic director of the Pipeworks festival, included a complete survey as a strand in this year's programme... The pipeworks survey gave listeners an unusal opportunity to sample the music in its entirety... David Leigh's late-night handling of the Livre du Saint sacrement in a darkened St Patrick's Cathedral was the highlight of the series"
"Margareta Hürholz's recital at St Michael's, Dún Laoghaire, where her incisive handling of the Offrande et Alléluia which rounds off the Livre du Saint Sacrement had a youngster in front of me beaming and bouncing with glee."
